Game Programmers Are Not Server Programmers

Evolving, separately but together.

You’ve heard the term, “all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares,” right?

The same concept applies to server programmers. Server programmers tend to be gamers, but not all gamers are server programmers. The love of building games has to come from somewhere. Programmers want to build and create the games that they love to play, but this does not bleed into every gamer out there. Not every single person who loves watching films and TV shows want to be a part of making them and not every person who enjoys gaming wants to be a part of server programming. Most people want to remain on the consumer side of game creation. The fact is, server programmers are critical to building effective games. But do game developers want to be server programmers?

Server software is still a fairly young concept in the gaming world. Just ten to twenty years ago, games did not need server software because they were either single-player games or multiplayer games where the people communicated in a peer-to-peer model simply between players’ computers. However, this model is fairly easy to cheat, which defeats the purpose of your game and the world you are developing.

As everything tends to grow and evolve in our ever-expanding society, games followed suit. Seemingly, in the blink of an eye, games grew out of that single-player model into gigantic multiplayer worlds that required more complicated server back-ends that have begun to feel out of reach to most programmers and gamers. The game industry is full of older outdated creators who are very secretive about what they do and how they do it. There is some irony in this, considering how rapidly technology evolves and changes and these older creators are responsible for so much of the vastly used technology the public utilizes presently. GamerGraph wants to turn this on its ear. We want you to succeed because, let’s be honest, the world needs better games and enthusiastic gamers and we want to help you create them.
